Immigration to Canada is at 75 year high
Tuesday, 4 December 2007
According to Canada's most recent census date, the rate of immigration to Canada is the highest in 75 years. One in every five people in Canada was born in another country.
Between 2001 and 2006, well over 1 million immigrants chose Canada as their new home. This far outpaces the growth rate of the Canadian-born population. Canada's active promotion of immigration is showing results - a strong economy with a uniquely diverse, multicultural and multilingual workforce. Studies have shown that immigrants to Canada are consistently more highly educated than their Canadian counterparts.
Most newcomers to Canada, just under 60%, come from Asia and the Middle East.
Canada's immigration rate means that it has posted the highest rate of population growth among G8 countries between 2001 and 2006. Indeed, without immigration, Canada’s population would actually decline.
