2543-11 Occupational Health and Safety Officer
Develops, implements and evaluates policies and programs to
ensure safe and healthy working conditions, and assists injured
staff through the workers’ compensation and rehabilitation
process.
Skill Level:
The entry requirement for this occupation is a bachelor degree
or higher qualification. In
some instances relevant experience is required in addition to
the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be
required.
Tasks Include:
- develops strategies and procedures to promote safe work
practices
- recommends job redesign strategies and procedures in the
event of work-related health problems
- develops fire and accident prevention procedures, and
coordinates evacuation drills
- promotes the use of ergonomic furniture and equipment to
minimise exposure to work-related injuries
- inspects and assesses industrial machinery and equipment and
chemical hazards, arranging repair or replacement as needed
- organises training for members of occupational health and
safety committees, fire wardens and first aid officers, and
coordinates health and safety education programs
- liaises with health professionals to incorporate expert advice
into accident prevention, health promotion and rehabilitation
practices
- investigates causes of accidents and recommends actions to
reduce risk of recurrence
- maintains accident statistics and fulfills workers’ compensation
reporting requirements
- advises and assists injured staff on recuperative and
rehabilitation activities
