Queensland economy on the riseTuesday, 5 June 2007 Queensland is well on the road to economic success following a recent study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Record low unemployment rates, increased consumer spending and rising incomes are among the key reasons for the recent economic boom. Wages in Queensland sky rocketed 4.1 per cent to $1046 per week, while the national increase was only 3 per cent. In comparison to any other Australian state, visitors and tourists to Queensland are staying longer in the Sunshine State which also has an occupancy rate above the national average. Queensland's population has now reached the four million mark for the first time, a direct outcome said to be from the migration of people from other parts of the country. Two-thirds of people live in the south-east corner areas of Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Queensland's job advertisements have also increased by 20 per cent in the year to February. Total employment in the state climbed to 2,132,000 people, with 73 per cent of employees holding full-time positions. Unemployment in Queensland (3.7 per cent) is at record lows, although employers are struggling to fill skilled trade’s positions. The biggest employers are the retail trade sector, property and business services, and construction. Queensland occupies the north-eastern corner of the mainland continent. Queenslanders share a quality of life that ranks with the best in the world. The state is drenched in sunshine, surrounded by warm seas, cool sea breezes and home to an enviable warm climate all year round.
