Australians study hard, live longerTuesday, 20 November 2007 A recent study comparing the well being and the standard of life between countries shows that Australia is among the best in the world! The study measures five important factors of a nation's standard of living: health, housing, the workplace, education and the environment. The report shows that Australia has one of the longest life expectancies for both men and women. The average age of men is 79 (second highest), while women outlive their male counterparts by living up to an average age of 84 (third highest in the world). Other interesting findings show that over half the Australian population is covered by private health insurance, compared to 12% in Britain. The importance of education was also examined, and showed that Australian students perform very well, amongst the best in the world. The literacy, numeracy and student retention rate for children in school has significantly increased over the past two decades. With high levels of home ownership and a strong tradition of union membership, it is fair to say Australia is one of the leaders when it comes to personal well being and standard of life. |
